Sleeping Through

29 January 2008

Since Sophie moved in to her own room, she has been sleeping through the night… hurray. I suspected that we were keeping each other awake, and with a dad who snores like a bear every time he rolls on to his back I think the poor girl was being woken by us more than we realised.

I still feel shattered though (how can I get more sleep and feel worse), and as I’m used to breast-feeding her in the night, by morning I look like I have two water melons attached to my chest. Andy quite likes the Dolly Parton look but I get Sophie feeding ASAP in order to deflate my huge appendages, and to prevent me from actually bursting… ouch!

Windy Baby and Sleep Deprivation

20 January 2008

I am so tired I could sleep undisturbed on a bed of nails. I haven’t suffered this badly from sleep deprivation since the week Sophie was born. She has been waking up progressively earlier each night and refusing to go back to sleep for several hours, the other night she was awake at 2.30am. Andy and I have been taking it in turns to bring her downstairs and let the other get some sleep. I think it is because she has trapped wind: she keeps throwing her legs in the air, letting them drop with a bang and arching her back – these are sure signs. She’s always had a lot of wind (she’s definitely her father’s daughter) and whenever there are windy noises at the mum and baby club everyone looks straight at Sophie. She has earned herself the nickname ‘Miss Trumpet Trousers’ at home.

I think it is because we have been feeding her solids in the evening between 5 and 6 pm (ironically to try to get her to go through the night without feeding so we could get more sleep). We have now started giving her the solids at lunch time which leaves the rest of the day for her to be as windy as she likes (funny how when you have a baby flatulence is suddenly a good thing). Unfortunately I now feel like a pack horse lugging containers and beakers everywhere. I think having breast-fed for five months I have gotten lazy as all the equipment you need comes with you by default. Still, there is an up side, at least I won’t have to get my boobs out in public quite so often now.
