High Chair Fall!

29 March 2008

I remember saying to a friend when Benjamin was first born ‘When do you stop constantly worrying about your baby?’ What I have learnt over the last five years is that you never stop worrying!

I find myself thinking about things that could go wrong or accidents that might happen. These thoughts come into my head at the strangest of times and are often completely irrational. Like all Mums I would do anything to prevent either one of my children hurting themselves.

Therefore I am not sure where my mind was on Sunday morning. I put Molly in her highchair, and did not do up the straps, assuming that the tray would keep her in place. After all I had only meant for her to be sat in her chair for a few minutes while I sorted her bottle out.

What I did not realise was that I had not attached the tray properly. The noise of the tray hitting our tiled kitchen floor made me turn round at the exact moment I saw Molly fall through the air and onto the fallen tray on the floor.

I screamed and rushed to pick her up. She held her breath for what seemed like an age and then she screamed (a good sign, so I am told after a fall).

Within minutes she was smiling and fine – a slight red mark on her forehead was the only sign. I on the other hand was in tears, shaking and had a general sickly feeling for a good few hours after, unable to take the image of her flying through the air out of my mind. As my father- in- law said to me later – ‘lesson learnt, you won’t do that again’ How very true.

Later that day Benjamin hurt his hand on the park gate. I felt I wanted to wrap them both in cotton wool and take them back to bed for the rest of the day out of harm’s way!
