Food Concerns
As a parent I find the whole daily diet consumption for my children to be the one area I probably worry about the most. Have they had enough food, the right balance of foods/treats? Is their dislike of a particular meal genuine, or are they over-tired, looking for my attention etc?
Molly has been ‘off’ her food all week, preferring the option of finger food to my homemade purees. I hasten to add that this bothers me – as I have ice cube trays full of the stuff in the freezer and most finger food ends up on the floor or wedged down the side of the high chair and not in her tummy! (Being hungry does not aid sleeping through the night!)
We have been out and about a lot this weekend which has resulted in us as a family eating a lot of meals out. I find this a real gamble with a young baby. Everywhere I go these places have different rules as to how they will heat up and provide your baby meal. Some places will not do anything – therefore you need to be armed with fruit or a meal that the baby will happily eat cold. Some places give you hot water – do they know how long it takes to heat a jar of food?! One restaurant had its own baby area –complete with a microwave. Great! However on opening it looked like it had never been cleaned. Yuk!
Meals aimed at Benjamin have not been much better. Sometimes it is very hard to steer him away from the chicken nugget option nicely photographed on the kids menu. As a treat this is ok – but more often than not the meal goes unfinished – perhaps not quite the ‘tasty’ treat he had hoped for.
Back home and I try to vary the weekday meals, introducing new tastes where I can. Most importantly I try to keep a reserve of patience for meal times as I try to encourage finishing the food that is on the plate. Only then can dessert be eaten - which at the moment of course is just yogurt!| « Prev | Main | Next » |
Hi Claire,
This may sound terrible but I'm SO glad you have feeding troubles too - I thought it was just my cooking but if your fab food doesn't go down well, then I know there's some hope...
As you know mine are now 15 months and I managed to get them both eating lumps, with a view to starting nursery this month. Initially Matilda ate everything going - shovelling it in in a very unladylike manner, Wills spat everything out whilst screwing his eyes up and making a disgusted face. He got better and they both loved things like casseroles, especially the meat - also liver (bleauughh). Now Wills is being quite good but Matilda is awful - she's back to wanting puree or toast/sandwiches all the time. I end up giving in and making her a marmite sandwich almost every day. She may be teething bit it's gone on for a while now. Doesn't help when they've been ill and you give them anything to make them eat - ie yoghurt all the time..
Please can you give me any advice on finger food or at least food that can be picked up rather than spoon-fed (as both would rather do this with lumps) that Ben liked at this age. They do love homemade fish fingers. I'm stuggling to get any veg in them though without resorting to Plum Baby pots...
Just about to read your chocolate entry in preparation of joys to come...
